Stories of the Herrings
Cleaning the Cemetery
After Martha Ball's son, George, married, he and his family moved to
Texas. On one of his visits home, George visited the cemetery and noticed that
it had grown up. There were tree saplings all over the place, and it had not
been mown.
George was upset by the sight of the graveyard where so many of his kinfolk
were buried. Through his urgings the cemetery was cleaned, trimmed, and made to
look nice again. The older citizens of Moss Creek end the surrounding
communities remember this story, and the cemetery has never fallen into such a
state again.
