More Information about May (Cox) Deeds

I was at Grave's Cemetery this weekend cleaning the area in the southeast corner of the cemetery. The area next to the fence is where I believe the Cox Family are buried. My gg grandmother, Martha Ann (Johnson) Cox Barnett is buried in this location.

While cleaning this area I noticed one of the graves did not have a natural rock for a headstone marker but it did have one for the foot marker. I assumed it must have had something at one time so I dug down about four inches below the surface and found a headstone with the name May Deeds on it. The head stone had no dates. I placed the headstone above the surface in the same location.

May (Cox) Deeds is the daughter of Robert A. Cox and Martha Ann Johnson Cox. Martha married William Barnett after the death of Robert A. Cox. The gravesite of May Deeds is one grave over from her mother's gravesite (south).

The reason I am writing this is to see if you could place her name in the cemetery listing. May has a great-granddaughter that was doing some research and told me that she had been told that May was buried in Grave's Cemetery in an unmarked grave. I have tried to e-mail her but she has changed her e-mail address.

May Cox Deeds was the wife of Caleb Monroe Deeds and the mother of Walter Clarence & Bonnie Deeds. I believe that May was Caleb Deeds' second wife. I do have pictures of the headstone and pictures of the location if you would like me to forward them to you.

It is not often you locate something like this and I want to help some find their lost ancestors' gravesites when possible. I myself have spent two years looking for the gravesites of May's grandparents with no results. Their names are James S.F. Cox and Nancy Catherine Reasoner.

The picture of the area shows a marker near me which is the headstone for Jim E. and Lusinda Cox. Jim is the brother of Robert A. Cox. Just below Jim E. and Lusinda Cox's gravesite is an unmarked grave. Beside this grave is an unmarked grave, beside this grave is Martha Barnett (Martha Ann Johnson Cox Barnett), beside her grave is an unmarked grave, beside this grave is May Deeds (May Cox Deeds) and the last grave with a tall marker has no writing on it.

Possibly Robert and Martha Cox

I have also included a picture that I believe is of May's parents, Robert and Martha (Johnson) Cox. It was found in the purse of my great-grandmother (Minnie Bell Cox Dycus) after her death. This is what was told to me to be a tin picture. Robert and Martha were married on June 5, 1885. I believe the picture was taken during that time. We assumed that the people in the picture were her parents, so I guess it really is unknown who they are.
