Notes for JAMES MADISON HALL:
Company D, along with Neely's company, had been detached in October and by March
1862 were at Island No. 10. In this first year of war the troopers camped in
relative comfort - at least compared to what was to come later. A-frame tents
were available and when they were in one location more than a day, the men would
make floors out of planks or palates. Each company had at least two wagons and
the men often carried trunks and chairs. Food was in abundance and some of the
men brought their servants to cook.
James became a sharpshooter and a scout. He would go behind enemy lines seeking
information. According to his son, Charles Henry Hall, James could mount a horse
on the fly by grabbing his mane and pulling himself up. This was very helpful in
case a fast get-a-way was necessary.
After Island No. 10 was abandoned, James fought at Shiloh and was in other
battles in Tennessee and Mississippi. General Nathan Bedford Forrest took
command of the 7th TN Calvary in December 1863. In January 1864, James was home
to resupply and to scout the Paducah area. He probably married Anna at this
time. In February the 7th Calvary regrouped in Western TN. The regiment was sent
to Okolona MS where they engaged the Union forces in battle.
On March 25, 1864 the Battle of Paducah was fought. James was not at the Battle
of Fort Pillow which followed. The next major battle James saw action in was at
Brice's Cross Roads near Tupelo, MS. This battle was on June 10, 1864.

Charles opened a tobacco business in Paducah after the Civil War. In the City
Directory of 1890-91, he is listed in business with John J. Thomas. Their firm
was Hall & Thomas, Dealers in Leaf Tobacco, located at 229 N. 3rd Street.
Charles was residing at 433 N. 5th Street. In the 1900 Census he was still
living at the same address. After Mary Overstreet died in 1903, he continued to
live in Paducah. Charles married Minnie Sander in 1906 and they moved to either
Arkansas or Missouri after 1910 (they were living in Paducah during the 1910
Census). In John Hall's 1920 obituary, Charles is listed as a survivor and is
living in Missouri.

Mary "Molly" Hall Grant was a charter member of McKendree Methodist Church. She
was buried in the Hall Family Cemetery. The exact location of the family
cemetery is presently (2000) unknown. Mary's older sister, Harriet Elizabeth
Hall pasted newspaper articles about various family members, unfortunately some
of the articles are not dated. In Mary's obituary it lists her mother, Annie
Elizabeth Hall, as a survivor so we know that Mary died before her mother who
died August 25, 1896. The Bible of Harriet Elizabeth Hall is in the possession
of Nancy Smith Bruce of Paducah. After talking with some of her descendants it
was learned that Jencie was reared by another family. It was told to them by
other relatives now deceased that Molly died giving birth to Jencie. Jencie
inherited from the other family.
