I am trying to find court records on an inquest that happened on May 31, 1914.
It was concerning a murder that took place on May 30, 1914 according to a
newspaper article found on the internet. The victim was Dr. J.W. Pipkin
and the person that murdered him was Dr. J.T. Cheairs (Dr. Pipkin's
father-in-law). Obviously the inquest was on Cheairs in which he was
exonerated. Can you tell me how I could go about obtaining those records? I am
a descendant of Dr. Pipkin and live in Richmond, VA. Thank you for your
assistance in this matter.

My great-grandfather, Jefferson Fieldien Collins, was born in Drew
County, AR, May 18, 1870. He told family it was Collinsville. Could this be
Collins township? His father was Pleasant Bohannon Collins, born in Drew County

Collins who married 1st Jane Duke in Greene County, AL, and 2nd Eliza
Ferguson in either MS or Drew County, AR. On 1850 Drew County census,

I am desperately searching for any descendants of Cumi Etheridge,
daughter of William Alexander Etheridge, and wife of William A. Halley
in Drew County, AR. I would like to know more about her family. William A.
Halley, her husband, was my great grandmother's brother. My ggrandmother also
married a man named Ethridge, and I'm fairly sure she might have married a
brother of Cumi (perhaps Albert). She would have met him somewhere around
1889-90 in Drew County. My grandfather's name was John Albert Ethridge. It
would certainly be logical that Martha and William Halley marry siblings in
Drew Co.
Mark H. Holden 28 April 2005
I am seeking information on the family of William Russ and Sarah
Davis Russ and/or their descendants. They are earliest found in the 1850

I am searching for the marriage of the sister of William A. Halley who
had married Cumi Etheridge, the daughter of William Alexander Etheridge
and lived in Drew County, AR between 1890 and 1932. His sister, Martha Melissa
Halley, had married a man named Albert Thurman (also from Drew Co.) in
January of 1892 in Union Parish, LA, but apparently something happened to that
man within the first month of her marriage. She visited her brother in Drew
Co., AR and apparently married a man named Etheridge (probably a brother of
Cumi Etheridge) early in 1892. My grandfather, John Albert Etheridge, was born
in December of 1892. I have considered that she might have married Albert
Etheridge, Cumi's brother, but I do not know what happened to him. Can anyone
help me with any info? Marriage lookup in Drew County, etc.? Any info on Cumi
Etheridge?

My Lee's were in Drew Co., AR, in 1870 and Hinds Co., MS, way back
before then. My gr-gr-gr-grandad was John G. Lee and his wife was Polly
Lewis. He was a minister. They are both buried on private land which
originally belonged to them in Terry, Hinds Co., MS. There are other
brothers/sisters there also. My great-great grandad was Anson Polen Lee and his
wife was Arabella Nicholson Bedwell. They are both buried in Prairie
Grove, Drew Co., AR. My great-grandmother was Maggie Belle Lee and her husband
was ??? John Jordan. My grandmother, who was born in what she said was
North Little Rock, AR, was Annie Belle Jordan and her husband was John Taylor
(Dan) Walters who lived in Garner (Springtown, Azle), Parker Co, TX.
From family history, Maggie Jordan's husband was killed in a horse riding
accident when my grandmother, Annie, was about 6 months old. She was born
October 13, 1889. Shortly after her husband's death, Maggie, came to Parker Co.,
TX, with other family members. I have not been able to contact any of these for
they are deceased or apparently from family history moved as a group to
somewhere no one can remember. Maggie remarried a John Freeman in Parker
Co., TX. She died in 1900 giving birth to her second child by him. I am kin to
Ferguson, McManus, Wolfe, Percer, Rial, etc.
I would love to share information on these families. I am especially interested in the Jordan line. I have no information on them at all. It was printed in a book that she was married to a Daniel, but the TX marriage licence shows she was a Jordan. I would appreciate any help. Thank you.

Drew Co., Ark. 1870 Census shows Lewis B. Fisher with the name Larkin D.
Fisher in parenthesis. What does this mean? Larkin D. Fisher is listed on 1860
Drew Co. census. Larkin Duke Fisher, born 1810 in Illinois, son of John Fisher
is the ancestor I am researching. Larkin D. Fisher was in Henry Co., TN,
McCracken Co., KY, and Drew Co. before he moved to Memphis, TN, where he died.
Larkin and first wife Martha Ann Jewell were parents of John Jewell,
William, Thomas B., and Marah Fisher. Will and Thomas stayed in Drew Co. Marah
married Charles Blood, I believe, in Drew Co. Larkin married second
Julia ----. I would like to find descendants of Will and Thomas and any

I am looking for information about Thomas E. and Mary A. Bussell, who
came to Drew. Co. around 1860. Thomas E. served with a regiment from Drew Co.
during the Civil War. He and Mary lived in Drew Co. until between 1880 and 1890.
He was either from TN or MS and was born Oct. 2, 1831, and died July 18, 1894,
in Jefferson Co. Mary was born Sept. 28, 1841, in TN or MS and died Dec. 14,

regiments during the Civil War - William, Benjamin, John, and James. I'm
guessing they were either Thomas' brothers or cousins. Are there any Bussells
buried in Drew Co., and if so, where? Does anyone know anything about these

I'm looking for a link to my great-grandmother Almira Barksdale (or
Jones) who was the second wife of Passins Alvis Thomasson--born York Co.,
South Carolina 1818, and died Lincoln Co., Arkansas 1899--I find in an internet
reference to a transcription of Goodspeeds Arkansas History that a William G.
Barksdale was the first seller of whisky in newly formed Monticello (12/20/1852)
and the Civil War records for Monticello (Owen's) Artillery Battery have two
Barksdale census records for the county in either 1850 or 1860. She left
Arkansas and my great-grandfather (I'm told) shortly after the War taking along
my grandfather William Alvis Thomasson (b. 1864). She may have been previously
married to someone named Jones when she married my great-grandfather around
1860. Family history says that my grandfather had a half-sister Alice Jones who
lived on the family place in Drew Co. My great-grandmother and her children
ended up in Texas--Dallas I'm told, probably in the 1870's.

I am seeking information on the Britt family members of Collins and/or
Cominto, Drew Co., AR circa 1896-1920. I am looking for anyone who may have any
information about the following Britt family members who lived in Collins, AR
around 1900, give or take 10 years back (early 1890s) and 10 years forward
(about 1910):
David Nathaniel Britt (b. 1855, Choctaw Co., MS - d. 1937, Webster Co., MS)
Luther Britt (b. c. 1857-59, Choctaw Co., MS - d. c. 1904-05, probably in
Collins, AR - Luther was lynched, murdered, or killed in/near Collins, AR by
townspeople as my family legend has it)
Jubal Britt (b. 1867, Choctaw Co., MS - d. after 1920, probably in/near Cominto,
AR)
All appear as residents of Collins, AR in the U.S. Census for 1900. All are brothers who moved to Collins, AR in the mid- to late-1890s from Webster/Montgomery Co., MS (Britts lived in/near the towns/villages of Alva, Lodi, & Spring Hill in that part of central MS)
In particular I am seeking any information on Luther Britt. He is my ancestor. Family legend has it that he was killed by townspeople of Collins, AR around 1904-05. He has the following wife & children:
wife:
Susie J. Stallings Britt (b. 1863, Choctaw or Sumner Co., MS - d. 1920,
Warren, Bradley Co., AR) (married Luther Britt in 1885, Walthall, MS - Susie was

Robert Floyd Britt (b. 1895, Webster Co., MS - d. ???, after 1940, maybe in/near
Warren, Bradley Co., AR)
Verlie Britt (b. 1905, Warren, Bradley Co., AR? - d. ??? - perhaps died
young--no further records on her after 1920 as she is in the Warren, Bradley
Co., AR U.S. Census for that year)
Any response from anyone who may have any information about the Britts of Collins, AR will be most appreciated--especially any information about how Luther Britt may have died in Collins, AR around 1904-05.

Conn Families! I am looking for information on the relatives or families
of Mary Luella, b. 1885; Pearl, C.C. or O.C., and Macie Conn, b. 1892; there
may be other siblings. Their father is believed to be David Conn and their
mother's name may have been Emily ? (unsure). Pearl Conn had at least 3 children
with last name Rowland: Roxie, Arlie, and William Orbay Rowland. By 1953
Pearl's last name was Hood, and she resided in Tillar, AR. Mr. C.C. or
O.C. Conn, and Miss Macie Conn in 1953 resided in Vernon, Texas. This
information printed in Mary's obit on February 12, 1953, in Morrilton Democrat,
Morrilton, AR. Mary Conn Hale, b.March 30, 1885 and d. February 4, 1953
was said to be a Logan County native, Yet in 1904 the family resided in or near
Plainview, Yell Co., AR, yet Roxie Rowland thought Mary was born at Stafford,
AR, and someone else said Mena, AR. It seemed that the family moved about. Don't
know why or where.
Macie Conn, b. Aug 8, 1892; d. Mar 1983; was believed to be the youngest child of the family and remained an old maid. At the time of her death Macie resided in Vernon, TX. I can not locate C.C. or O.C. Conn.
Pearl was the mother of Arlie Rowland of Ft. Collins, Colorado, William Orbay Rowland of Dumas, Arkansas and Roxie Rowland Sims of Dardanelle, Arkansas. Roxie and William Orbay are now deceased, unsure about Arlie. Please contact me direct at georgiemiller47@hotmail.com.

Do you have information on James or William Hayle/s of Drew
County? There are 3 James Hayle/s...Hale/s on the 1859 census of
Marshall Co., MS - one of them is definitely a relative of my William and Amanda
Hayles of Drew Co., Arkansas as on the next 1860 census James L. Hayle and wife
Margaret J. Todd were living next door to William in Drew County,
Arkansas in 1860. In 1860 Amanda's sister also next door, Frances Green.
Their mother Susan Bell shows on the 1880 census with Amanda's daughter
Susan Hayle, also widowed from her husband Luther Maley whom she married
in Desoto. James and Margaret Todd Hayle in house 648 of Marshall, MS. He was
26, born in NC and she 19. Daughter Susan was newborn. Later in Drew County,
the children on 1860 census are Susan R 10, William E 9, Mary E 6, Luander J 4
(M), James M 4 and Elizabeth Lood 19 (could she be Todd & not Lood?)
James & Nancy Hale Marshall County, MS 1850 is believed to be his father and mother, They live in house 685.
Next door to James and Nancy in 1850 MS is John & Nancy Todd, age 33 & 35. They must be related to Margaret Todd who married the other James. James Hayles of Wake (next to Johnson) Co., NC. Married a Nancy Shaw 2-11-1811. I believe this to be the same couple on the 1850 Marshall Co. census. Their children are shown to be Maclin, male age 19, George 18 M, James T 16 M, John 13 M, Rebecca 10 F. There are 2 others in the home which I can not read. Maclin is very hard to read. At one time I thought he is/was my William, before he married my Amanda Bell in neighboring Northern MS County Tishomingo 12-1852. He still may be my William. I suspect he is my William as the son of William and Amanda Bell, William Truett Hayle was referred to many different names in my research on him. One being Macus or Maclin (was also hard to read) others being Willie, and what appears to be Tucker. Neither family appear to be in Marshall Co. in the 1860. Can anyone help me with research on these families?

I just found out that some of my ancestors are from Drew County. I need some
help, please, in solving some puzzle pieces.
Mary Tidwell shows to be living in Smith township, 1870 census...with only her children. Who was her husband, and when did he die?
James Bailey shows to living in Clear Creek township, 1870 census with his wife Eliza and their children. At some point around 1875-77 Eliza apparently died. I would like to know when and what cemetery she is in, please. James Bailey then remarried to Mary Tidwell (1880 census records). When did they marry? It was probably around 1877-78. I would like a marriage date for them.

was Frances Lee Gaster of Drew County, b. 1882 in Arkansas, d. 1913, AR.

children, Namio, Nettie, Richard, and Charles Edward. Charles died when he was
six or seven years old. He is buried in Tillar and so is my Grandfather. My
Aunt Effie Vickers Asher lived in Monticello. She lived close to the rug
mill. When we were young we would go to a little store and Swans Cafe. My
mother was Arline Bethea. She was from Warren. We lived in Wilmar,
Warren, and Monticello. My Grandmother was Ruby George Bethea. She married Opal
Childs from Banks. If anyone has any connection or information or
pictures of Tillar they could share, I would appreciate it. Oh, yes my
Grandfather remarried Mary Susie Cone, and she had grandchildren. They
were Johnny, Arron, and Robin Hood. Thank you.

On the 1920 census there is a Jeff Smith, with wife Ella, and daughter
Eddie Mae. The age of Jeff Smith could be my gr-grandmother's brother. She was
Mary Artie Smith Ashcraft. I know she had brothers named Will and Jeff.
There was possibly a Frank Smith. My mother was born and lived in AR around
that area till she was about seven years old. She was Anna Sebille. Her
mother was Bessie Ashcraft. On Mary Artie Smith's death certificate it has her
father as James Smith. We do know Mary Artie had Cherokee blood, from which
side I do not know. Her mother was listed as unknown, so I would assume it was
her mother. The Smith family Mary Artie came from is the one I am looking for.
It is possible Will or Jeff had a grocery store in Wilmar.

Wells Family: Please share any information you might have about Judge
Wells or his ancestors. We especially want to know his grandpa's name! These
people were Tennessee pioneers. His dad David Wells was born in 1772, and
served in the TN Militia, and later the TN Cavalry in the Creek War of 1814.
Died in 1849.
William Harrison Wells came to Drew County from Haywood County, TN. He was born in 1806, was appointed the first County Judge of Drew County in 1846. Died in 1871, and buried at Wells Cemetery.
I have heard that there are still a lot of Wells cousins in Drew County. Some of you people must still have this family information? Thanks!

I am looking for my great-grandfather, his surname was Green. He died in
Arkansas probably between 1896 and 1899. He was probably born in or around
Webster County, Mississippi. From the death certificates of two of his
children, their father's name was listed as David Green, however on the
Application For Social Security for these same children, his name is listed as
Spurgen or Spurgeon and Price. He and his wife, Arminta "Minnie" Jane
Hood Green had four children. Their third child, Ola Green or Mary Ola
Lela Green was born June 28, 1894 in Collins, Arkansas. I have been told that
he was working in a sawmill and was shot in the back. There was not much known
about Mr. Green because he died when the children were so young. Their mother,
Minnie returned to Mississippi when he died and a few years later married John
Pinkney Caffey.

Seeking information on possible burial site in Drew County, for Sullivan
Sheffield Hemingway (Hemenway). Sullivan and his brothers settled
in the Monticello area in the late 1850's. He married Caroline Ferguson
then went off to war, enlisting as one of the original members with the 3rd Ark
in Monticello. He was wounded at Sharpsburg 1862, listed as missing, then
showed up with the 8th IL Cav. in 1865. Several years after the war he returned
to Arkansas, Monroe Co., but traveled as a circuit preacher (we believe) in the
area of Drew & Ashley counties. It was on one such trip to Monticello
(possibly) that he died and was buried in an unknown location in the late
1890s. More information has been posted in a query in a Monticello paper from
my mother Annie Hemingway Stine. Believe the query was posted in the 29 Jan and
5 Feb editions. Thank you in advance on any Hemingway info.
