Research Facilities

There is an active genealogical society ($25/yr includes annual historical publication), the Drew County Historical Society, 404 South Main Street, Monticello, AR 71655. There is an archive located at the Historical Museum, 404 South Main Street, Monticello, which has many old letters and other artifacts donated by members of the society, as well as books containing family histories and other research materials.

Bartholomew's Song is the history of the entire length of Bayou Bartholomew in southeast Arkansas and northeast Louisiana. It is over 600 pages long and contains 94 old photos. The first part, the historical section, describes the source, how the old Arkansas River once occupied the bayou bed, archeology, the colonial period, histories of early bayou settlements and nearby hill settlements, steamboating, overland travel, fords, ferries, bridges, floods, slavery, Civil War, Reconstruction, sawmilling, agriculture, law and order, wild game, hunting, the bayou as recreational and cultural site, and ecological concerns. Part Two is family histories of the 64 people interviewed plus additional ones submitted by others. An index of names included in the book can be obtained by emailing Rebecca DeArmond-Huskey.
