history of the entire length of Bayou Bartholomew in southeast Arkansas and
northeast Louisiana. It is over 600 pages long and contains 94 old photos. The
first part, the historical section, describes the source, how the old Arkansas
River once occupied the bayou bed, archeology, the colonial period, histories
of early bayou settlements and nearby hill settlements, steamboating, overland
travel, fords, ferries, bridges, floods, slavery, Civil War, Reconstruction,
sawmilling, agriculture, law and order, wild game, hunting, the bayou as
recreational and cultural site, and ecological concerns. Part Two is family
histories of the 64 people interviewed plus additional ones submitted by
